Inhaled Asthma Therapy in Children
Posted by Unknown on Sunday, November 25, 2012
Asthma occurs by the process of inflammation (inflammation) chronic / chronic typical, involving the respiratory tract wall / breath, causing limited airflow and increasing reactivity (hiperreaktif / hypersensitive) airway. Although asthma can occur at any age, but is more common in children, especially in children from the age of 5 years.
It required immediate cure for asthma in children, so it will not interfere with the activity and subsequent child development. Asthma treatment aims to stop an asthma attack as soon as possible, and prevent the next attack, or when arising attack back attacks will not be heavy.
Asthma medications can be divided into two major groups, namely relievers (reliever) is used to relieve symptoms of asthma attack or if it is incurred. For example, drugs known as bronchodilators and drug control (controller) is used to solve the basic problems of asthma, the inflammation / chronic airway inflammation eg corticosteroids. Giving drugs to asthma can be through a variety of ways, parenteral (intravenous), oral (tablet taken), or by inhalation.
Inhalation therapy is the administration of drugs directly into the airway through inhalation or inhalation. Currently this therapy more widely developed and widely used in the treatment of respiratory diseases. Various kinds of drugs like anti inflammatory / anti-inflammatory, antibiotics, mucolytics (thinning phlegm) and bronchodilators are used in inhalation therapy. In asthma, inhalation therapy allows direct drug delivery to the lungs, so it can be quickly overcome shortness of breath.
Inhaled drug that is given must be able to reach his workplace in the airway so that the particles inhaled asthma medications should be very small (2-5 microns).
The advantage of using inhaled therapy is that it works directly to the target organ, in this case the lungs. This is obviously very advantageous when compared with oral therapy (in the drink) that must pass through the stomach to digest it first and parenteral therapy (injections) to go through the blood vessels. Additionally onset or a shorter working period / rapid, dose of the drug used is smaller so it can reduce the side effects of excessive medication.
Providing the ideal inhalation therapy is a simple tool, easy to carry, little medicine left in the upper respiratory tract, and can be used by children well. But the ideal situation can not be fully met.
Broadly speaking there are three kinds / types of inhalation therapy devices, namely Inhaler / MDI (metered dose inhaler), DPI (dry powder inhaler) and nebulizer. (1) Inhaler / MDI, the inhaler is Vahan active drug suspended in approximately 10 ml of liquid booster (propellant). This tool is used by spraying medication into the mouth and then sucked into the mouth in order and then exploited in order to get into the lungs. Prior to use canister / tube shaken first so homogeneous, then held inhaler upright and the patient had maximal expiratory. Then the canister is placed in the mouth between the lip and sealed to be done slowly to a maximum inspiration. Spray the drug in mid-inspiration and hold breath for 10 seconds and can breathe normally. The procedure can be repeated after 1 minute. When finished be sure to rinse to prevent side effects.
If people can not make a move spray and suck in a row, it can be used a tool spacer (junction) in the form of a tube with a volume of approximately 80 ml length of 10-20 cm. Benefits spacers are several drugs can be exploited so as to maximize that all drug into the lungs.
(2) DPI, used in a way to suck / inhale medicine into the mouth, and then forwarded to the lungs. The difference with MDI is sprayed unnecessary medication first. The use of DPI requires a powerful inspiration. In children aged less powerful inspiration hard to do so is more advisable to use in children over 5 years.
(3) Nebulizer, used by inhaling the drug solution that has been converted to a mist / aerosol. There is no difficulty at all in using a nebulizer, because patients simply breathe normally and mist will be inhaled drugs into the lungs. There are two types of nebulizer compressors and ultasonic the form. One dose of the drug will be inhaled depleted no more than 10 minutes. Children aged less than 2 years require additional masks for paired nebulizer. A nebulizer is a little advantage requires coordination of patient, some drugs can be mixed, and requires only tidal breathing.
Inhalation therapy is the right choice for asthma in children because many have benefits compared with other therapies. However, this therapy is still rarely used more is because of the constraints in the form of techniques and methods of delivery that are less precise. So we need further consultation with your doctor to determine the proper and current information. Hopefully with this therapy the treatment of asthma in children can achieve significant improvement.
